Biden Picks Buttigieg to Head DOT

Former Democratic presidential contender Pete Buttigieg has been chosen to head the U.S. Dept. of Transportation.

President-Elect Joe Biden announced his selection of the 38-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Ind., earlier this evening.

Key Position

Buttigieg was a rival during the presidential campaign before dropping out of the race at the end of February. He promptly threw his support behind the Biden campaign and, following the election, was widely considered likely to join the Biden cabinet.

DOT, which wields a budget of roughly $80 billion, oversees the country’s aging transportation infrastructure. Rebuilding the nation’s roads and bridges—and touting mass transit and other means of reducing carbon emissions—is one of Biden’s self-proclaimed ...READ MORE

Bosch Books $3 Billion in Software Business

In July, Bosch made it clear how important software is to its future with the formation of a new Cross-Domain Computing Solutions division, which will encompass 17,000 people when it formally launches next month.

Money Talks

Underscoring the news (with a giant exclamation point), the company now says it has landed orders totaling $3 billion since mid-2019 for “vehicle computers.”

“Vehicle computers have huge business potential for Bosch,” asserts Harald Kroeger, a member of the Bosch management board.

For What?

Bosch supplies controllers for powertrain and driver assistance systems, and soon will add body electronics and cockpit units.

But the real goal is a high-powered centralized computer that combines multiple ECUs.

Baidu Ponders Making Its Own EVs

Search engine giant Baidu reportedly is studying a scheme to produce its own electric vehicles.

The company, often described as the Google of China, aims to hire a carmaker to build its cars under contract. Sources tell Reuters that Baidu has held exploratory talks about the idea with Geely, Guangzhou Automobile and Hongqi.

Baidu isn’t talking, and no decision is imminent. But the company’s stock price jumped to an 18-month high on the news of a possible deal.

Where to Next?

Whether Baidu is thinking about making EVs to sell to consumers, create its own fleet of electric robo-vehicles, or both remains to be seen. But the company began three months ago to test the former idea with its Apollo Go Robotaxi service in Beijing, Cangzhou and Changsha.

Baidu is deeply into ...READ MORE

As Easy as Riding an E-Bike

Cars. Trucks. Delivery vehicles. Even 3-wheelers and droids.

If it moves, chances are that Valeo has electrified and automated it.

That’s the point. The greater the volume, the lower the cost—and the more robust the technology becomes.

“We are leveraging and adapting the technological platforms that we developed for the automotive industry, both those dedicated to ADAS and to low-voltage electrification,” explains CEO Jacques Aschenbroich.

Pedal Assist with a Twist

The latest transport to get Valeo’s electrification treatment is one of the oldest: bicycles.

In partnership with gearing specialist Effigear, the French supplier has adapted its 48-volt technology for two-wheelers with an integrated system that teams an electric motor and a 7-speed ...READ MORE
