Ford, Bosch and Bedrock Collaborate on Automated Parking

Ford, Bosch and Bedrock Collaborate on Automated Parking

“Nobody likes driving around a parking structure looking for a parking spot,” said Mike Mansuetti, president of Bosch in North America, a man who admits to liking driving otherwise.

To that end, Bosch is collaborating with Ford, and Bedrock (a real estate development firm) on a demonstration program that will have Ford Escape test vehicles parking themselves in the Bedrock Assembly Garage in Detroit, a garage that has been instrumented with Bosch sensors.

Essentially this is a demonstration of V2I—vehicle to everything. As Ken Washington, Ford Chief Technology Officer, pointed out, the OEM is deploying modems in its vehicles for a variety of purposes (e.g., for SYNC 4, for over-the-air updates), and this is another example of how they are useful.

Ford, GM Ready to Phase Out Ventilator Production

Ford and General Motors say they are close to filling a combined 80,000 orders for medical ventilators.

The companies began gearing up in March to make the mechanical breathing machines as American medical emergency rooms became overwhelmed by the burgeoning COVID-19 pandemic.

Rebuilding National Reserve

At the time, existing U.S. supplies of the machines were low in the Strategic National Stockpile. The White House announced a target of amassing 130,000 ventilators from carmakers and others by the end of this year.

The U.S. currently has an inventory of 108,000 ventilators, with another 12,000 currently in use in American hospitals, according to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. HHS tells Reuters it has received about 69,000 of the breathing machines from Ford and GM and ...READ MORE

Porsche Takes High Roads to Clean—and Fun—Driving

Want to plan the perfect road trip? Hint: It probably won’t be the fastest way to reach a destination, but it will be the most exhilarating and/or scenic route.

Porsche launched its “Roads” app last year to help drivers find such motoring nirvanas—no matter where they are in the world—based on published reports and member ratings.

Now it’s making several enhancements that allow users to better share the experience and ensure the environment outside the vehicle matches what they’re feeling from behind the wheel.

The More, the Merrier

Launched last year, the free app has more than 100,000 community members in some 60 countries.

A new “tours” features lets users connect with other drivers—regardless of what make or ...READ MORE

Court Won’t Reconsider Ruling on VW Emission Updates

A federal appellate court has rejected Volkswagen’s plea to block local authorities from enforcing vehicle emission standards.

VW vows to take its case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

VW’s Argument

The crux of the debate is about the extent of federal authority to set and monitor emission standards. VW contends that it starts and ends with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Not so, ruled a U.S. District Court in San Francisco last year. Its decision has now been affirmed twice by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, also in San Francisco.

The two courts agree that EPA has the sole power to set nationwide emission limits for new vehicles. But they say state and local jurisdictions retain the right to enforce their own laws about after-sale tampering with federally ...READ MORE

Mahindra Partners with Integrated EV Platform Developer for Commercial Vehicles

India’s Mahindra & Mahindra has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tel Aviv-based startup Ree Automotive to develop and produce electric commercial vehicles using the Israel company’s chassis technology.

The partners didn’t provide a timeline for the program.

Integrated Wheel Module

The Mahindra EVs will use Ree’s skateboard platform and integrated corner module. The latter houses electric drivetrain, sensors, controllers and other components into each wheel well.

The design, which is said to be one-third lighter and has a two-thirds smaller footprint than other skateboard-type EV platforms, includes:

  • By-wire braking and steering
  • Fully sprung electric motors
  • High-powered ECUs
  • Artificial intelligence-based preventive maintenance algorithms
