Freudenberg Leans into Industry 4.0

Manufacturing buzzwords come and go: from kaizen and Six Sigma to lean and total quality management.

And Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (FST) has used them all, with varying degrees of success.

Now it aims to optimize the different tools by integrating the overall process with the help of the next big thing: data analytics and Industry 4.0.

2 Hats, 1 Mission

The job is being led by Ted Duclos, who is fast becoming his own C-suite. He was appointed CTO five years ago, then added COO duties at FST in mid-2019.

Duclos, who joined Freudenberg Group in 1996, says the dual roles are a natural fit that helps FST streamline innovation and productivity from product development through manufacturing. The common goal, he adds, is satisfying customers.

Good Design Awards for 2020 in Auto

The Good Design Awards for 2020 have been announced, and in the car and transportation design category, there are a number of familiar OEMs who have achieved the nod from 18-person internationally jury (including Chris Bangle, who has been directing Chris Bangle Associates S.r.l. since leaving BMW in 2009). 

Among them are:

  • Genesis
  • Ferrari
  • Hyundai
  • Lucid
  • Kia
  • Nikola
  • Nissan

Genesis vehicles awarded are the G80 and the GV80. Ferrari, the Roma. Hyundai for the new Elantra and for two concepts, the 45 and the Prophecy.

Qualcomm and Great Wall Motors Connect

Qualcomm Technologies—the tech company whose chip might be in your cellphone—and Great Wall Motor Company Ltd. (GWM)—which claims to be “China’s largest SUV and pickup manufacturer” (it also makes cars)—have announced that they are working to develop autonomous vehicle capability using the Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride Platform, which will power the GWM “Coffee Intelligence” system.

What Are These Things?

The Snapdragon Ride Platform is based on modular, heterogeneous high-performance multi-core CPUs, energy-efficient AI and computer vision engines, and a GPU.
