Next-Gen Nissan Z Steps Out

Next-Gen Nissan Z Steps Out

The Nissan Z Proto looks familiar. That’s by intent.

In developing the prototype model, which will provide the basis for an all-new Z sports car, Nissan paid homage to several past incarnations of the iconic nameplate that was introduced in 1969 as the Fairlady Z in Japan and Datsun 240Z in the U.S. and other markets.

"Our designers made countless studies and sketches as we researched each generation and what made them a success," says Nissan Design Chief Alfonso Albaisa. "Ultimately, we decided the Z Proto should travel between the decades, including the future."

Lots of Show, Little Tell

Nissan unveiled the Z Proto on Tuesday.

The car is described as being about 98% of what’s in store for the production model.

But details are scarce. Here’s ...READ MORE

Ghosn Aide Pleads Not Guilty on Pay Charges

Former Nissan Director Greg Kelly denies helping Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn illegally hide $43 million in compensation.

Kelly and Ghosn were arrested separately on the same day in November 2018 on suspicion of financial wrongdoing. Ghosn, who incurred three additional charges of financial manipulation, skipped his $9 million bail at the end of last year and fled to Lebanon.

Ghosn declared himself the victim of a conspiracy between Japanese prosecutors and a cadre of Nissan executives who sought to block his efforts to merge Nissan with Renault, its alliance partner since 1999. Ghosn asserted that a fair trial in Japan was impossible under the country’s “hostage justice system” and has vowed to clear his name while in exile.

Kelly has been out on bail but ...READ MORE

GMC “Tows the Line” with Sierra Upgrades

If you own a fullsize pickup truck, chances are you put its towing capabilities to work.

More than half of GMC’s Sierra customers report doing so. Whether it’s a boat, an RV or some other toy that needs to be pulled in a trailer, pickups are up for the job...even if it’s a chore for the drivers.

20/21 Vision

GMC aims to lessen the burden with a number of enhancements for the 2021 Sierra 1500 and Sierra Heavy Duty models.

Several features have been added to improve visibility and help drivers maneuver bulky trailers. These include:

  • Trailer-length indicator that displays a red overlay on the infotainment screen’s camera feed that’s twice the length of the trailer when the turn signal is activated to highlight potential blind spots when trailing ...READ MORE

FCA-PSA Tweak Merger Terms

The auto industry’s largest merger ever is still on track. But the terms have changed to cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles still expect to finalize a $47 billion deal to form a new holding company called Stellantis before April 2021.

More Cash

The two major tweaks they have in mind will give Stellantis an additional €2.9 billion ($3.4 billion) in cash. Both partners have previously dropped plans to pay dividends on 2019 results worth €1.1 billion to each group of shareholders.

Now, FCA also will nearly halve the special merger dividend it initially proposed to pay its equity holders to €2.9 billion from the original €5.5 billion.

At the same time, PSA will retain rather than spin off its 46% stake in ...READ MORE

Volvo Air Filter Targets Tiny Particulates

About 90% of cities worldwide don’t meet the World Health Organization’s recommended air quality levels. That’s disturbing.

But you don’t have to worry about the problem inside your car…as long as you’re riding in a new-model Volvo…in Canada.

Primo Air, Canadian Style

In what’s billed as an industry-first, Volvo is launching a new filtration system that promises to block 95% of harmful PM2.5 particulates (2.5 micrometers and smaller) from entering a vehicle. The so-called Advanced Air Cleaner uses a synthetic fiber-based filter and ionization to get the job done.

If sensors detect that such pollutants already are inside the vehicle, the particles can be pumped out during or even ahead of a trip (if the owner activates the system ...READ MORE
