Porsche Launches Probe into Gas Engine Cheating

Porsche Launches Probe into Gas Engine Cheating

Volkswagen’s Porsche brand is investigating evidence that some of its gasoline engines were illegally manipulated.

Porsche has alerted regulators in Germany and the U.S. of the possible modifications, which apparently involve emission cheating, Bild am Sonntag reports.

Illegal Changes

The newspaper cites a vaguely worded Porsche statement that refers to “suspected illegal changes to hardware and software” of engine developed between 2008 and 2013. Bild says the affected engines were used in 911 sports cars, Panamera sedans and unspecified other models.

The report says Porsche has been interviewing employees and examining hundreds of thousands of email to assess the suspected cheating. KBA, Germany’s federal motor transport authority, also has opened its own ...READ MORE

Sato Wins Spectator-less Indy 500

Takuma Sato won Sunday’s Indy 500. He prevailed over runner-up Scott Dixon, with the final 10 miles run under a yellow caution flag following Spencer Pigot’s crash on lap 196.

Officials opted not to red flag the race as the track was being cleared, then restart it under green for a full speed “overtime” finish.

It’s not the most exciting way to finish a race (compared with NASCAR shootouts). But this year, erring on the side of caution seems appropriate.

Afterall an “abundance of caution” prompted organizers to delay the Indy 500 nearly two months from its traditional Memorial Day weekend slot. For the same reason, the race was held without any spectators in the stadium and all participants were required to wear masks.

JLR Targets Increased Use of Recycled Aluminum

Aluminum already is one of the most widely recycled materials in the world.

In fact, nearly 75% of all the aluminum ever produced in the U.S. and Europe still is in use today, Jaguar Land Rover says, citing data from the Aluminum Assn. This includes aluminum recycled from cars and trucks at the end of their lifecycles.

However, the carmaker notes, only a small amount of the aluminum content in new vehicles comes from recycled sources. JLR views this as an opportunity.

Closing the Loop

Currently, most aluminum from end-of-life vehicle scrap is re-used for low-end applications, such as beverage cans, bottle tops and foil food trays.

But JLR says new separation technologies allow aluminum car parts to be repurposed back into the automotive process. Under the REALITY Aluminum research ...READ MORE

Legendary French Brand Reborn as $2 Million Hypercar Maker

Delage, a storied brand in automotive history, is set to make a comeback with a new 1,000-hp-plus hybrid hypercar…68 years after the French nameplate was last in production.

The rebooted Delage Automotive aims to produce 30 of the new D12 models, which are expected to start at more than $2.3 million. Customer deliveries are due some time next year.

Fast and Imperious

Teaming a 7.6-liter naturally aspirated V-12 engine with a small electric motor and 8-speed transmission, the powertrain will generate a combined 1,115 hp and propel the D12 from zero to 100 kph in 2.5 seconds on its way to an estimated top speed of 233 mph, according to the carmaker.

A carbon fiber construction keeps the GT variant’s weight at just under 3,100 lbs. A track-focused Club model cuts about ...READ MORE
